Distimo Explains What it Takes to Have a Top Ranked iOS App Zzzzzstore

There's a clear path to the top of Apple's App Store, according to a new report from Distimo. And it might be exactly in line with what you already expected: score a huge number of downloads on a daily basis.

Culling data from Distimo AppIQ, a new report Friday indicates that an iOS app needs at least 23,000 downloads per day on average to reach the rank of #50 among the top free iPhone apps in the United States.

For paid apps, Distimo says, the average number of downloads needed for this position is only about 950 daily downloads. An app needs to generate daily revenue of approximately $12,000 to reach #50 on the top grossing charts.

If, on the other hand, you’re gunning for a top 10 spot in the Apple App Store (for free apps), you’ll need to log at least 72,000 app downloads a day. To make the top ten on paid apps, you’ll need about 4,000 daily downloads.

However, Distimo notes, the estimated number of downloads required to reach the top of any category can change day to day.

“Compared to the downloads required for rank 10 in the top overall free on an average Monday in May 2013, only 94 percent of these downloads were required on Thursdays for this position in the Apple App Store for iPhone in the U.S.,” the company says. “In order to obtain this position on a Sunday, an app needed 11 percent more downloads than on the average Monday.”
