On Thursday, Facebook announced a new feature called Nearby Friends that would be rolling out to all users over time.

Nearby Friends, as Facebook notes, is an optional feature from within the application that users can enable if they want to share their location with friends on Facebook. When you get close to someone that you know, you will get a notification like the one above that tells you when friends are nearby.

Notably, you have the power to choose when and where to share your location with friends, and you can also choose it
