| Apple to fix iMessage issue in future iOS software update Apple has acknowledged the iMessage issue that is affecting users who switch from the iPhone, in a statement to Re/code. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of the issue: - Quote :
- The Messages iOS app ties your phone number to your Apple ID, and ensures that people sending texts to your number arrive over iMessage, a free service, rather than SMSes through carriers, which is paid. This is great for all iPhone users, unless you happen to switch to an Android or Windows Phone.
Even after switching to a different platform, the Messages app on your friends’ iPhone continues to think that you still have an iPhone, and texts they send are delivered over iMessage, which means that you won’t see these texts on your Android phone. Moreover, the messages show up with a “Delivered” status on the sender’s iPhone, so they won’t even come to know that these messages aren’t going through. Re/code reports that Apple rolled out a fix on the server side but it seems to have made things worse instead of fixing the issue. Apple has acknowledged the issue, and has promised to provide a fix in a future software. - Quote :
- “We recently fixed a server-side iMessage bug which was causing an issue for some users, and we have an additional bug fix in a future software update,” Apple told Re/code in a statement. “For users still experiencing an issue, please contact AppleCare.”
Until Apple resolves the issue, users need to first disable iMessage on the iPhone, and uncheck the phone number from any other Apple devices on which they are using iMessage before switching to another device. Apple is probably not doing this intentionally, but for a user, this acts like a lock-in, and makes it very difficult to switch from an iPhone, given that there’s no easy way to fix this issue or let people know that you’re no longer on iMessage. |
