| iOS 8 and iPhone 6 to support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for better call quality Posted by Rocky We already know a number of things about iOS 8, the next major update to Apple’s mobile operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. A new report claims that another feature iOS 8 will bring to the iPhone is Voice over LTE (VoLTE). The feature would require new hardware, and will reportedly be available in the next-generation iPhone 6. VoLTE, as the name suggests, carries calls over the LTE network, which can improve call quality and reduce carrier costs. 9to5Mac reports: - Quote :
- Another significant addition being considered for iOS 8 and the next-generation iPhone is voice-over-LTE support (VoLTE), according to carrier sources. Currently, when an LTE-capable iPhone needs to make a phone call, the actual call is placed over last generation networks such as 3G. With VoLTE, calls will be transmitted over the same type of network that LTE data is processed through, and this can allow for benefits such as improved call quality.
Apart from hardware and software support, your carrier would also need to have infrastructure to support VoLTE. Currently T-Mobile supports VoLTE, and Verizon and AT&T are slated to rollout their VoLTE network later this year. The report adds that iOS 8 support for VoLTE could be pushed back if enough carriers don’t have their networks ready in time. iOS 8 will be launched at WWDC, scheduled for June 2nd, and will include features like Healthbook, improved Maps, Preview and TextEdit apps and a lot more. You can head over to this link for a comprehensive roundup of all the iOS 8 rumors. @ |
